Brake Pads (or Friction Material)

  Sintered Metallic Organic
Composition Hardened metallic ingredients bound together with pressure and temperature. Fibers and organic materials bonded together with resin.
Burnish Time OK Typically shorter than Sintered Metallics.
Coefficient of Friction Compound dependent Compound dependent
Friction Fade Characteristics Compound Dependent – Typically fade at higher temperatures than Organic pads Compound dependent
Thermal Properties Conducts heat through to the caliper. Acts as an insulator to the caliper and pushes the heat back to the rotor.
Wet Performance Good – Porous and capable of absorbing water. Poor – Friction material does not absorb the water and begins to hydroplane on the surface of the rotor.
Wear Characteristics Great – Capable of withstanding all weather conditions (Mud, Dust, Sand, etc) Good in clean environments, poor in mud, dust, sand, etc.
